Bank Account Information

Keeping Track of Your Bank Account

It maybe easier than ever to keep track of your bank account information but, at the same time, it is also getting easier for there to be a huge mix-up in your account that can results in fees and headaches. Money transactions move at the speed of light, but getting that information has not quite caught up.

It used to be that if you wanted your bank account information you either had to wait for your monthly bank statement or make a trip to the bank to talk to a teller. Today, you can access your bank account information online, and can call a number for your balance. Because bank account information is so widely available now, many people have made the mistake of letting their checkbook ledgers go unused.

Joint Bank Accounts

People forget to add or deduct money when appropriate and this causes huge problems, especially for those with a joint account.

A person may write a check at ten AM. When their spouse checks the couple’s bank account information at noon, the check has yet to be deducted for the account, so they think there is still money. They, in turn, write a check. The end result is that the account is in the hole for not only the amount of the second check, but for the fees as well. No matter how fast modern technology may be, it is still a good idea to keep track of your bank account information the old fashioned way. Keep your checkbook register up to date, and remember to always reconcile your bank account information when you get your monthly statement.

Online Bank Accounts

Online bank account information is useful. It is a great way to keep track of your spending, and is also the first clue that something is not right. It is harder and harder to pass off stolen checks these days, but it still happens all the time. You should keep an eye on your online bank account information to watch for unauthorized purchases and checks. When shopping online, don’t forget to protect your bank account information. Always make sure the site you are dealing with is secure, and don’t give information you don’t feel comfortable giving out. If at all in doubt, stick to reputable companies.

If you suspect any activity you find in your bank account information is not the result of spending by you or your spouse, call your bank immediately. This is the best way to protect yourself from scammers and thieves. Just like your social security number, always keep your bank account numbers and PIN to yourself.
